Shayegani, Mehdi G. (U.S. Veterans Administration Hospital, Philadelphia, Pa.), and Stuart Mudd. Role of serum in the intracellular killing of staphylococci in rabbit monocytes. J. Bacteriol. 91:1393-1398. 1966.-Although some intracellular killing occurs in rabbit monocytes with heated normal serum or even in monocytes washed three times with Hanks' solution and with staphylococci not exposed to serum, efficient killing of coagulase-positive Staphylococcus aureus cells in the mononuclear phagocytes of rabbits is shown to require heat-labile components of serum. The effect of serum in promoting phagocytosis and intracellular killing may be exhibited either by presensitization of the staphylococcal cells before contact with leukocytes or by the presence of serum in the phagocytic system. Under any conditions studied the rate of intracellular killing of S. aureus is very slow.

A STUDY OF THE INTRACELLULAR KILLING OF THE PERIPHERAL BLOOD NEUTROPHILS IN β- THALASSEMIA MAJOR PATIENTS
52 β- thalassemia major patients were studied. Their ages ranged from two to 20 years. The group consisted of 22 girls and 30 boys. Candida intracellular killing and NBT (nitroblue tetrazolium) tests were performed on the peripheral blood neutrophils of these patients. Average results of the intracellular killing test was within normal range for the patients, but showed an appreciable decr...
متن کاملRequirement of extracellular complement and immunoglobulin for intracellular killing of micro-organisms by human monocytes.
The role of serum factors in the intracellular killing of bacteria by monocytes was studied on the basis of an assay independent of phagocytosis. After 3 min of phagocytosis of preopsonized bacteria and removal of noningested bacteria, the monocytes containing bacteria are reincubated for various periods and the number of unkilled bacteria is determined by a microbiological method after lysis o...
متن کاملA Study on the Effects of Modulation of Intracellular Calcium on Excisional Wound Healing in Rabbit
An in vitro study on the role of intracellular calcium ions in healing of excisional wound in rabbit was undertaken. We employed two drugs namely, glibenclamide and nitroglycerin that are topically applied in vivo to modulate the activity of intracellular calcium. Our model consisted of a 15 ´ 15 mm excisional wound. Seven groups of New Zealand rabbits were used. The first three groups served a...
متن کاملInteractions between Rabbit Polymorphonuclear Leucocytes and Staphylococci
A method has been described for the study in vitro of leucocyte-bacteria interactions which permits the simultaneous evaluation of both phagocytosis and intracellular bacterial inactivation. Employing this technique, the fate and localization of staphylococci in homogeneous suspensions of rabbit polymorphonuclear leucocytes have been studied. Coagulase-positive strains of S. aureus were not eff...
متن کاملCYCLIC NUCLEOTIDES CONTROL DIFFERENTIATION OF HUMAN MONOCYTES INTO EITHER HIGHLY ACCESSORY CELLS OR MACROPHAGES
Human peripheral blood monocytes have been found to undergo a transitory state of high accessory activity before they fully become macrophages. Time kinetics were done to follow this accessory potential. Studying the regulation of accessory activity, we have found that monocyte derived accessory cells (m-AC) pass through two phases of development, both of which are adversely controlled by ...
